Did an article on the decline of English proficiency, as reported by Kelly Services. Might get interviewed for Oriental Daily on this.

Interesting re-titling of the article I wrote for the sun on the subsidies and low salaries earned in Malaysia.

The Sun: Why is 90 days maternity leave too much?

May 20, 2010

Boy, this one got some negative feedback. I wrote about how businesses tend to be prone to say "no" than to look for a solution to the problem, using the 90 days maternity leave called on by National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE).

The Sun: Corporations can give more

Malaysia has its fair share of business-savvy individuals. My question is: how many of them are lending their knowledge to the not-for-profit sector?

Sun: When It’s Hard To Be Bosses

October 23, 2009

It is sometimes tough being an employer. Some employers actually go out of their way to be good to their workers. Yet, in return, they sometimes face the most under-performing and unreasonable staff around.

The Sun: What Makes A Business Responsible?

September 18, 2009

On the one hand, we have unhappy workers or employees working in possibly unsafe conditions, and on the other hand, their employers are planting trees or contributing to the community. It is no wonder that so many people view “corporate social responsibility” with suspicion, or worse still, cynicism.

Guan Eng tells Utusan reporter to leave

Haszrul (right), who could not come to terms with her eviction, said she attended the press conference to carry out coverage on MPSP, not the Pakatan state government. “If it was in Komtar, I would accept it. But this is MPSP office and its council’s function. “I don’t understand why Utusan should be banned,” she… [Read more…]

My first column which does not really focus on employment (although it started out on labour news). Freedom of Information, anyone?

The Sun: What would we do without them?

My most recent writing on foreign domestic workers, published in the Sun April 15th, 2009. "Now, the process to hire a domestic worker begins the day after a couple conceives. Things have become so easy for us in this regard that children appear to be brought up more by domestic workers than the parents themselves."

My contribution to the Sun on retrenchment and recession for March 2009.

Foreign workers sent home

March 11, 2009

The Home Ministry wanted 70,000 Bangladeshi workers to come into Malaysia. The HR Ministry says foreign workers must be the first to be laid off / retrenched. Why, Home Minister? Why labour outsourcing companies?

The Sun: Workers Want Trustworthiness

Being interested in the new management field of corporate social responsibility (CSR), I asked a friend recently why there appears to be more CSR consultancies opening in Singapore than Malaysia. He answered, without even thinking, "Because businesses here aren’t really interested." This might explain why only five participants were present at the "Integrity at Work" forum, organised by the MCA Integrity Watch Group in January.

The Sun: There’s hidden talent near you

THE year 2009 began on an encouraging note for me. I met a young man working with a large publishing house. He reminds me a little of me several years ago, but for a few things. He is visually impaired in one eye and is hearing impaired. However, his employer is blind to this, as the young worker is afforded the same privileges, salary, benefits, etc as his co-workers with the same qualifications and experience.
