GV: Humans as Commodities

May 3, 2009

Finally, I wrote something for Global Voices in 2009! In early 2009, Malaysia had the dubious privilege of being investigated by the US senate for the trafficking of humans. News reports stated that the migrants involved were mostly from Myanmar, but other foreigners were also allegedly taken by the government officials to the Malaysian-Thai border, where they… [Read more…]

This is in relation to Utusan’s report that Penang has established an inter-faith council last year. He told reporters in Parliament, These are lies…we have no such council… And if… [Read more…]

The Press Gazette reported that four peers (in Malaysia, senators in the upper house), including two former ministers, were prepared to help undercover reporters, posing as lobbyists, change laws in exchange for cash. Complaints are expected to be made to both the police and the House of Lords authorities following the Sunday Times story, which reported two Labour peers as being prepared to accept fees of up to £120,000 to amend laws.

A few lawyer friends and I had lunch on Friday. Personally, I had stopped bothering about the whole Razak Baginda malarkey. I mean, honestly, he says he’s innocent. He also says Najib and Rosmah are innocent. So who’s guilty? If he knows he’s innocent and Najib and Rosmah are innocent, does he know who’s guilty?… [Read more…]

Earlier this year, de facto Law Minister, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, promised to bring changes to Malaysia’s legal system, beginning with the judiciary. While he was in office, Zaid set up a committee to… [Read more…]

While some might be unhappy with the RM10.5 mill ex-gratia payments to the forced-retirement judges, I personally don’t understand what the fuss is about.
