Islam & Environmental Conservation

Amidst all the fatwa outcries on yoga and tomboys, I would like to point out one piece of Islamic news which is good, namely that mosques in Terengganu will be giving a special sermon on environmental conservation, especially highlighting the plight of the turtles.

According to news reports, the Imams will emphasize the importance of the environment and discourage egg poaching, polluting the seas and uncontrolled fishing.
Apparently, this is a joint initiative the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), which runs a turtle conservation project in Terengganu. WWF’s Rahayu Zulkifli was quoted as saying:

In a Malay Muslim-dominated society like this, they look up to what the imams say and this is a way to get the message down to the local communities, where turtle eggs are still consumed freely.
