Corruption in the judiciary?

Apparently, DAP Chairman Karpal Singh has an audio recording of what Chief Justice Tan Sri Zaki Azmi said in Kuching. According to the New Straits Times (NST) article on Nov 8, entitled ‘Stop it now, corrupt court staff warned’, Zaki said, It took me six months to be nice, to bribe each and every individual to get back into their good books before our files were being attended to.

Nonetheless, Zaki denied what was reported in the NST subsequently. His clarification, published in the NST on Nov 9, stated, “Your reporter must have interpreted what I said, which is during that period, there was corruption in order to get things done at the court registry, as I myself having done it. I have never in my life bribed or received any bribe.”

But now Karpal claims he has a recording of what was said, and has called for Zaki to resign in seven days for allegedly admitting to corrupt practices while in private practice. Karpal has called Zaki’s clarification a “lie”, and was reported to have stated that the Chief Justice has misled the country and therefore is not fit to continue holding the post.

Karpal has said that if Zaki does not step down as CJ within a week, he “will have no alternative but to move a motion against him under Article 127 of the federal constitution” for misleading the country with his clarification.

Karpal has to-date lodged a police report and moved a motion to debate Zaki’s appointment as CJ in Parliament twice. Unfortunately, the Speaker did not allow the motion on both occasions.
