Slave trade again

There’s no doubt about it, human trafficking is the contemporary version of slave trade. The deprivation of liberty, the forced labour, it’s kidnap, it’s despicable, and it’s one of the biggest form of international trade in the world.

NST reports:

Lured to Singapore with promises of well-paid maid jobs, the five women escaped when they were sent to Malaysia.

The Indian High Commission here is making arrangements to send them home.

Commission counsellor Sudhir Kumar Mehrotra said they had reason to believe the women, of the Zeliangrong Naga tribe, were promised lucrative jobs but were duped to work as bar girls and prostitutes in nightclubs in Singapore and Malaysia.

It’s incredibly disappointing that human trafficking is rife in South East Asia, with Singapore and Malaysia as either a hub or middle ground. Batam island is known for the forced prostitution there, and anywhere else where there are ‘health centres’ and the like.

I believe many people don’t understand the situation, and I think it’s time we learnt more.
