Slave Trade

As mentioned last week, I went for a conference/workshop on migrant workers over the weekend. Organised by the CCM’s Women’s Committee and Tenaganita, the workshop re-introduced me to Irene Fernandez, for whom I did some legal aid work while I was in chambers ten years ago when she was first arrested.

Firstly, it was eye-opening. It was sad to see the how bad it was for migrant workers, and even worse to see how a human being can treat another, not only on the micro-level but also the macro level. Human beings being treated as commodities has to be the most vile thing ever. The ‘jual-beli’ of one person is just horrible. Aside from the ‘labour’ element, some humans are treated as vehicle, whether as mules for drugs, or as incubators for babies to be sold. Just horrible.

Secondly, the hope which comes from the situation. Yes, strange but true. The darkest, most despicable acts gives rise to hope in many. It gives rise to a stronger faith, and it gives rise to indignation to do something to help. By the way, the 21st century slave trade I’m talking about is in Malaysia, not elsewhere. Of course it happens here!

Thirdly, the knowledge I gained over the weekend is priceless. Not only the nitties and gritties of slave trade, but also the knowledge of action, how these activists deal with situations, and the relentless energy and hope which drives them. Incredible knowledge!

Finally, Irene Fernandez herself. She said, “When I was arrested, I felt such a sense of freedom.” I think I understand what she means.

Here’s to her and Tenaganita. I’ll update you on any help I can give to this great cause!
