Moonlighting for civil servants!

When I was in secondary school in the 80s, I had to take tuition in Maths (of the modern variety, I’m useless at Mathematics), Physics (surprise surprise) and literature (as I did it ‘on my own’). My tutors were teachers in government schools i.e. civil servants. The tuition culture has flourished since. In fact, I was told that in some school teachers now do not teach during class, and encourage their students to go to their tuition classes after school.

This, mind you, was when they were officially not allowed to moonlight. It has recently been reported that civil servants now may look for extra legitimate cash after their work hours. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Senator Tan Sri Amirsham Abdul Aziz, was reported to have said that the government now encourages all Malaysians to work harder over weekends, and was also looking at facilitating those who wanted casual part-time employment at teller or counter services in the public and private sectors.

This is a long-term solution to the high cost of living we are experiencing.

Well well…

Interestingly, Public Service Department D-G Tan Sri Ismail Adam was reported to less than enthusiastic with this porposal. He was reported to have said that civil servants with second jobs might experience some adverse effects on their productivity and performance. This sentiment was also expressed by this reader to the Star newspaper.

My question, instead of rushing off during the long lunch break on Friday to the SOGO sale, would they be rushing off to sell nasi lemak outside their office building?
